Celebrating 15 years
11th November 2016
Earlier this autumn, Engain’s environmental project director Nikki visited Bonn in Germany, gaining useful insight into the application of the current guidelines and ramifications of the Paris Agreement.
Following the landmark Agreement coming into force earlier this month, Nikki will next week meet with Caribbean Small Island Developing States during the 22nd Conference of the Parities to the UNFCCC (COP 22), in Morocco.
This year’s convention in Marrakech represents a critical turning point for action on climate change.
“It’s a monumental time, following ongoing global discussion on tackling the effects of our changing world, and of course, the recent US presidential elections.
“Last year’s COP21 in Paris saw the further development of the framework for addressing climate change; this month in Marrakech, decisions on rules are expected to be made, to not only achieve but exceed these goals.
“For the Parties to the Convention, it’s time to act, changing policies according to protocol and helping fellow countries to make bold decisions on shaping the future.
“There are some great examples of significant commitments already having been made – e.g. Amsterdam aiming to make every vehicle emission free by 2025 – but there’s plenty more to come.
“Ultimately, the policies and changes put into effect by signatory countries will affect people’s attitudes and behaviours. It’s consequential decision-making on a worldwide scale, and this year’s COP22 is set to make for a really fascinating, impactful conference.”
Nikki Wood will be in Marrakech from Tuesday 15th to Friday 18th November 2016, meeting with Caribbean SIDS. Please get in touch if you would like to arrange a meeting during her visit.
The Paris Agreement, made in December 2015, bridges today’s policies with climate neutrality before the end of the century. Its goals are to limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C and aim to keep it to 1.5°C, driving to a zero carbon economy by 2050, with all the policies and financing in place to ensure that action occurs and no country is left behind.
