Improving Network Rail's coastal line

Challenge
Maintenance and repairs were required on a seafront railway operated by Network Rail on the Isle of Wight. Regulatory consent was required from the Marine Management Organisation, before the time critical works could proceed.
Working on behalf of Network Rail, Engain identified the opportunity to first obtain an emergency licence from the MMO for the sensitive stretch of coastline, which features many European protected species.
Our understanding of the licensing procedures and the inter regulatory relationships between the MMO, Natural England and the Environment Agency, enabled the rail operator to swiftly obtain consent. This strategic action meant the necessary repair works could be conducted quickly and safely.
