Challenge
Following on from our work near Campinas on a major new town sustainable masterplan, Engain was requested to provide seminars and workshops in Brazil for professionals working in the design and construction industry, as well as for local officials and regional agencies. Over 200 participants attended these events over 3 days, with multilingual translation services.
Our approach was participative through a series of informative seminars followed by interactive workshops. There was ample time devoted to Q&A with a panel of in-country experts.
We presented a deep dive into EIA implementation from our extensive project experience from the UK and other countries to answer how EIA provides benefits to project design, decisions, and measurable sustainability.
What we examined:
- how EIA has developed over the past 30 years from a tick-box exercise into a professional compliance and sustainability process
- the environmental legislative and policy structure that underpins EIA
- examples of EIA for major mixed-use developments and how the process plays out from planning through to construction
- we also examined EIA for national infrastructure projects such as the priority Trans-European Network route of the West Coast Main Line railway and a new power station for Gibraltar in the Mediterranean
Achievements
- Successfully delivered a suite of seminars on the application of Environmental Impact Assessment
- Engaged a broad audience in participative design workshops
- Provided detailed practical examples of the EIA process and how it informs and improves sustainable design
- Introduced global expertise to the Brazilian market
