Gibraltar is a melting pot of biodiversity and heritage. Dipping just below Spain’s southern coast, this British Overseas Territory guards the Strait of Gibraltar, the only entrance to the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean. It boasts numerous plant species and wildlife that are unknown or considered rare anywhere else in the world, and it also contains several important UNESCO world heritage sites and areas of historical and cultural significance.
The project involves the movement of a particular development from one location to another, using the process of land reclamation. Land reclamation involves creating new land either by removing water from muddy areas or raising the elevation of a waterbed or low-lying land. In this case, the land is being created from the sea, working with the natural area to create valuable land reserves without harming the delicate ecosystem surrounding the area.
Informed by over two decades of knowledge of the area, Engain have carefully conducted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Scoping Report to determine possible effects the project might have on the environment. This detailed scoping report includes any likely effects on population, human health, and the environment, balancing both marine and on land biodiversity with cultural heritage. The land reclamation project is still ongoing, with the goal of making the development relocation as smooth as possible, and allowing Gibraltar to preserve its natural, cultural, and historical heritage.
