Engain export their knowledge for the development in West Africa

A large infrastructure project required the support and opinion of Engain, alongside a team of internationally renowned experts, to contribute to an Environmental and Social Assessment in West Africa.

Natural resource-based livelihoods are a prevalent feature of the region’s economy, so biodiversity loss can have particularly acute social impacts on affected communities. Engain worked with the project team to consider the ecological, economic, and social outcomes of the project and were tasked with developing a survey work plan for the collection of biodiversity data, linked with the project’s stakeholder engagement process.

Looking at the potential ecological implications of the project, Engain made sure the survey plan would assist the infrastructure project in complying with IFC PS6 (Performance Standard 6) and the interrelated requirements of PS1 and PS7. The resulting social and biodiversity survey plan facilitated the collection of data using local skills and resources to establish biodiversity values in consultation with affected communities. This information was then used to inform the project’s Biodiversity Management Plan, underpinned by a Critical Habitats Screening Assessment.

The expertise of Engain, alongside that of local knowledge and renowned global experts, was an important part of the project’s commitment to Environmental and Social Responsibility.
