Vacancy: Assistant Ecologist

At Engain we pride ourselves in supporting and mentoring individuals who are at the start of their professional ecology career. By providing exposure to a range of office and site based consultancy skills, our Assistant Ecologists gain an understanding of sector expectations and professional awareness. The Assistant Ecologist role is fully supported by the whole Engain team to ensure well rounded development.

Key Responsibilities

Tasks and activities

  • Production of Risk Assessments and Method Statements for site work
  • Data searches – including requests to local record centres and providing return reporting
  • Supporting with the organisation of field surveys – including preparing equipment and data sheets
  • Supporting with the completion of field survey work, always delivering to best practice standards – including habitat and protected species surveys
  • Data analysis – including developing skills in bat call analysis
  • Supporting with report delivery – including ecological appraisals, protected species reports and management plans

Qualities, skills and qualifications

  • Studying for a BSc or MSc degree in a relevant topic
  • An awareness of the policy, legislation and best practice standards commonly applied within the ecology discipline
  • Basic species ID skills and an awareness of UK protected species
  • Excellent communication skills with colleagues
  • Self-motivated and proactive approach to work, with a constructive response to instructions
  • A team player, offering support to colleagues to meet client expectations
  • Excellent time management and ability to deliver within a deadline
  • Adaptability to tackle changing workloads and unforeseen challenges
  • Working towards a CIEEM membership
