Bat Mitigation, Enhancement and Habitat Creation, Kingston Mills
Wiltshire is home to a diverse array of bat species and is particularly noted for horseshoe bats. A large-scale development in the heart of a Bradford on Avon is home to 2 significant summer roosts belonging to lesser horsehoe, brown long-eared and pipistrelle bats.
Environmental Gain conducted surveys to establish the use and importance of these roosts and formed appropriate mitigation measures that were approved by Natural England. An existing maternity roost was repaired, a new dedicated summer/maternity roost was created, an existing WW2 pill box was converted to provide a winter hibernaculum and bat boxes were installed throughout the site. A 5 year monitoring programme is currently underway assessing the success of the new mitigation.

Environmental Impact Assessments in Gibraltar
The Government of Gibraltar has recently begun several large-scale projects requiring EIAs to assess the effects of a new airport terminal and ringroad on the environment.
Environmental Gain established and project managed a team of consultants to assess, advise and mitigate on environmental sensitivities including air quality, land contamination, ecology, noise and vibration, land use, traffic and transportation, water resources and waste and materials. Planning permission has been granted for the 2 new projects and are currently being developed.
Reverse Osmosis - Desalination Plant EIA
Gibraltar obtains its potable freshwater supply from a desalination plant. The current desalination plant - operated by Aquagib Ltd (under license agreement with the Government of Gibraltar) - is reaching the end of its design life. Aquagib is taking the opportunity to relocate the desalination unit and upgrade to new technologies including Reverse Osmosis.
Environmental Gain was instructed to manage the EIA of the proposed new plant to support a planning application. The main issues assessed included the potential impacts on the physical and biological status of the marine environment from which feed water would be taken and brine discharged.
Environmental Risk Assessment for Leisure Development
Environmental Gain was asked to undertake rapid Environmental Risk Assessment as part of the pre-acquisiton audit of sites for leisure development. Data searches on the historic uses of the sites and the implications of surrounding land uses were reviewed and assessed for risk and potential liability. Our reports have provided the client with a clear check list of the key environmental considerations and recommendations for risk management.
EIA for a Complex Mixed Use Development, Wiltshire
On behalf of Taylor Woodrow Developments Ltd, Environmental Gain completed a complex and sensitive EIA for a mixed commercial and residential development in the heart of a historic mill town in Wiltshire. The development proposals are on a previous industrial site which is constrained by the existing road traffic system - leading to air quality and noise issues in particular.
Environmental Gain has assisted in mitigating significant effects to the environmental through the iterative design process.
Power Station EIA Gibraltar
Environmental Gain is assessing the potential significant effects of a new 30MW diesel powered generating station in Gibraltar on behalf of the Government of Gibraltar. The EIA scope includes air quality, noise and vibration, landscape and visual, built heritage and ecological assessments amongst others. The project is one of the deliverables for the £2b Sovereign Bay development being designed and constructed by MCB (a consortium including the Australian developer Multiplex).
Desert Surveys
Environmental Gain undertook ecological survey work in the Rub al Khali, Saudi Arabia for a proposal for a crude oil expansion project. Identifying key components of the ecosystem we undertook a rapid assessment of the proposals and made recommendations for changes to the design to mitigate impacts.
Assessing Birds and Windfarms
Working on behalf of a private client Environmental Gain is assessing the potential impact of the development of windfarms on an area of intensive agriculture which is used by flocks of overwintering birds of conservation interest.
In order to fully utilise the vast data accumulated a bespoke database has been developed for the project. This enables rapid interrogation of the data for a wide variety of factors including numbers, direction of flight, activity, and habitat usage.
Working for the UK Rail Industry
Environmental Gain is committed to the rail industry and staff have a wide range of relevant railways experience, including Transport and Works Orders and EIA for small and large projects. We are trained to appropriate safety standards (eg Personal Track Safety) and we are Link-Up approved for most environmental and business services.
